The two scammers
Police in Frederick Maryland say they’ve arrested two Liberian citizens who tried to scam the owner of a Chinese restaurant out of $100,000.
The men allegedly told the restaurant owner that they could counterfeit $100 bills by placing them between sheets of black paper and applying a chemical.
During the investigation, police officers learned that the two men, Liberian citizens later identified as Calvin Billfrank Swen, 44, of Jamaica, N.Y., and Radcliffe Reynold Howard, 41, of Philadelphia, initially visited the restaurant to ask about buying the business, according to the police.
On a later visit, they demonstrated the black-paper trick and asked the restaurant owner to give them $100,000, saying they could turn it into $4 million which would then be split evenly between them.
After several communications with the restaurant owner, police officers conducted surveillance operations and arrested the men as they entered the business.
Both men are now awaiting appearances before the District Court Commissioner.
I mean really how stupid are these guys to think that they would have gotten away with something like this? it infuriates me when people like these two bring unnecessary bad publicity to our community, Liberians are known to be hard working law-abiding people, and for these two crooks to bring such shame and disgrace to us is unforgivable.
An old saying back home says when your eye spoils, you can’t ask someone else to lent theirs to you, because they are Liberians, we the thousands of other law abiding Liberians apologize for what these fools did, there is no justification for what they did, and i hope they put behind bars for a very long time.
I’m absolutely gutted with the individual who says he is infuriated and is on a campaign trail to have the arrested men incarserated for a very long time.
You are a typical example of what Liberians are known for, your inability to identify the underlined cause of why the arrested men engaged into such act, jealousy, hate and division to name few among others.
I am a Liberian and giving what i know about Liberia,i must say that your believes about Liberia is a misconception. Liberia worldwide is known for its corrupted regimes, war and high level of division within its small but divided society. And which is why victims of these circumstances have to improvise. And i must say your comment about these guys bringing bad publicity to the Liberian community is an exaggeration, total nonsense and at worst has no substance.
And who are you to condemn the arrested men unforgivable? Please, i rather you keep your mouth mute if any case of this kind pops up next time. Because i guarantee this an ongoing process until the west, our corrupted governments and fools like you find a suitable approach to our people who are in dying need of help.
you call this dying need of help by cheating other people. if anything you are the fool, for encouraging such acts, if you don’t like my opinion you should start your own blog, and don’t be leaving stupid comments on my site.
It’s either you’ve lost your ability to understand, reason or probably never had one. It’s about time you started an awareness program to help you understand what’s going on around you. Rather than describing two men as cheats.Who have an alternative means of responding to what was inflicted upon them.
Speaking of cheats, how will u describe the ones who have got high interest rates raining down on your credit cards, mortgage payments and making u and others pay high tariffs on items purchased? For example, gas price that went rocketing sky high for no tangible reason.
Not to speak of wars deployed upon our communities to consolidate the powers of the so-called elite if you will. My dear countryman the world has lost its moral value certainly. It’s not an issue of right or wrong anymore.
I am an admirer of this blog, job well done. Therefore i need not open one. You have given me the opportunity to express myself to those and not only you who have always
been judgemental about hustlers from Liberia.
Remember we are only fighting back. Fighting back to contribute to the restoration of our damaged and fragile economy back home.
my dear brother, my countryman, i am trying really hard to understand your logic, but i am still not getting there yet, how is it ever alright for people to to wrong, and its alright because they are suffering. even in the Bible, joe refused to do wrong because he was suffering. the fact of the matter is two wrongs don’t make right, other people like the somalis came here in worst shape then us, and they seem to be doing just fine because they are hard working people.
we are ambassadors of our country, and we must represent our country in a positive way, until we understand that, we are always going to have these kinds of problem in our community.
two Liberian, yes are argee with you we are ambassadors of our great country this never happen until the war these guys want to wear the best of jeans and shirts they need to be put away for a very long time mr. howard and his friend brought this shame to our country we do work but this is how they earn there living by stealing from hard working people they do have kids and there kids will fellow dad foot stairs.
sir, want to know if you heard anything about these guy case? please update us. thanks peter joseph
Peter joseph needs to get his spellings and english right before participating, you’ve just proven that most liberians are empty headed. i dont care about the subject
I believe that the liberian people need programs for counseling especially the children. You do what you see others do and learn from what you was taught. The war has caused many to do evil to survive. The people of liberia are free now and will continue to be free. Your bondage is within your mind and your freedom is in your doings. Don’t be a slave anymore and don’t listen to what others say to lead you in the wrong direction. Friends cannot bring you to your destiny but God alone. Man must follow God to be on the road to freedom. Save yourself and stop trying to save others or look down at others. If you find the way out then others will follow you. You will never be able to stop evil minded people from doing what they have already destined to do but you can be a role model for others through the struggle to promote change. Your choice of what road to take is up to you.

You will see more than this that you speak about but don’t be alarmed but be prayerful and watch.
i don’t have much to say guys how do you expect another people to live all finger is not the same.your forgetting to know we from a war country,
bye for now
Hi fellow Africans. I most impressed by the thinking of ‘Endsmeet’. I’m originally from Cameroon in central Africa, but have live in Monronvia ( Sinkor) where my uncle was ambassador. I must say I found Emmanuel both comments and attitudes unacceptable. you show a luck of tolerance and understanding. At some point, you were even refering to the bilble. Havent you come accross a passage saying ‘ Judge not’ ? Do you remember when Jesus went and had diner with the tax collector? Or have you forgotten when he also ask the crowd to stone the prostitue if any of them told she had done something they them self had never done. This two fellow that were caught are your fellows country men At this stage of thei lives, they need your help, support and some sens of brotherhood. It pains me greatly that someone from Liberia, country of which the greatest number of inhabitants were subject to slavery, think and react in such a way. Instead of treathening Endsmeet to expell him from your blog just because he disagree with you, you better do some research as who started this scam in the first place. You will be surely be amazed to find out that Americans are the one who brought that scam to Liberia when the Marshall plan was implementated. You are talking about wrong and wright . Whats your conception or definition for wrong and wright doing? Who actually set the standards? Do you thing is wright for the west to set prices both when they are buying and selling? Do you know the historic not history of the world bank and the International monetary fund? Do you the impact of decisinos taken by this institutions in our people every day lives? Do you also realise that if this two fellows had gotten away with their sacm, that money could have contributed to sustain a great number of families? I mean family in African sens. cousin nephew aunt grand mother etc… Doing what they did and selling weapons to slaughter Africans , wich one is severe? If you want to expell from your blog, please do so, as I wouldnt care less.
I m not trying to take side in this discussion but just pointing out some key issues here…. endsmeet is making a critical point and I do understand the points he is making; we are living in a society of great inequality and social stratification, so there are always systemic bearers that deter people from pursuing their life goals so they end up turning to crime to attain their needs. moreover, the social injustice that we experience in the work force as socially racialized group makes many people not want to work. No matter what we do and how we learn, there is always a glass ceiling that prevent us from accelerating in our career. so this whole thing is critical but there must be a structural change that will address poverty, inequality, polarization and social exclusion before this problem can be solved. I have never engaged in any illegal activity but we should not blame the poor victims…. they are just been victims to the social structure.
E-man can we learn to love and forgive our brothers, every one of us act stupid and go a very, very wrong way.I know these men are very wrong.no matter what we’re farmily so let look out for each others.I don’t think you’re heartless seeing your brothers going to jail for a very long time.
